A Tracey Emin exhibition at the Foundling Museum showcasing work based on the theme of childhood, motherhood and loss. Set in the galleries and outside spaces of the museum, Emins art is joined by Mat Collishaw and Paula Rego to create a full exhibtion of work on children and separation.
Tracey Emin exhibition
The Foundling Museum is certainly the best place for the exhibition as the venue was the very first home for abandoned children in Britain. Set up as a museum in 2004 to tell the story of the Foundling Hospital, the buidling now hosts art exhibitions alongside its exhibits from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Childhood and loss
All three artists taking part in the Tracey Emin exhibition at The Foundling are renowned for their work around the world, and much of their previous art has been based on their responses to the pain and loss associated with childhood, motherhood, abortion and loss. Revealing both a hard and softer side to their artistic skills, the work on show follows a long tradition of depicting the anguish of mothers losing children and the pain of being a lost child.
Tracey Emin
A lost mitten, a tiny sock and a teddy cast in bronze are the Baby Things included in this show that come from a previous Tracey Emin exhibtion. The Foundling has placed them in the part of the museum relating to family memories and lost children. These items were previously showed in the Folkestone Triennale in 2008 to highlight the issue of teenage pregnancy, and are now on show next to some of the tokens left by mothers leaving their children at The Foundling in hope of being reunited with them in the future.
Paula Rego
Creating new work especially for the Tracey Emin exhibtion at The Foundling, Paula Rego's pieces include several paintings in the form of an altarpiece, featuring life size portraits of children. The themes portray popular eighteenth century topics and their repercussions in a similar style to Hogarth and his Gin Lane series. Entitled Oratorio, the altar measures over three metres high and dominates the landing of the museum.
Mat Collishaw
Photos make up the bulk of Mat Collishaw's contribution to this exhibtion, with images of Indian street children set against an 18th century backdrop, entitled Idle Young. Another highlight of the show from this artist includes a work based around the tale of Romulus and Remus, and a snowdome that has been created specially for the exhibition.
The Tracey Emin exhibition at The Foundling Museum takes place from 10am - 5pm, Wednesday 27th January - Sunday 9th May 2010. Tickets are £7.50 or £5.00 for concessions.
