The latest Trafalgar Square sculpture to cause a stir in the Fourth Plinth Commission is Nelsons Ship in a Bottle by Nigerian born British artist Yinka Shonibare. Having previously taken the form of the giant naked eight and a half month pregnant Alison Lapper, the Model for a Hotel by Thomas Schutte, and the Antony Gormley One and Other, who took the term public art to new extremes, the newest Fourth Plinth sculpture is now in residence until late 2011.

Trafalgar Square Sculpture
Based on a model of Nelsons Ship, the Trafalgar, in a bottle, the sculpture makes an unusual and unique addition to the traditional style statues already in residence. Set to become a staple landmark for the next few months, the new Trafalgar Square sculpture is sure to have those who love and those who hate it, both from the city itself and visitors to the capital.

Fourth Plinth Commission
Regarded as one of the most public art spaces in the country, Trafalgar Square receives millions of visits from tourists and Londoners every day. With the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery just off the square, the area is renowned for its events and artistic exhibitions, and so the new Trafalgar Square sculpture is bound to have people divided.

Artistic interpretations
As the Alison Lapper Pregnant sculpture caused divisions amongst the art and the disabled communities, the Model for a Hotel offended those that want to keep the pigeons out of public areas in the city, and Antony Gormley invited actual members of the public to stand on the plinth for one hour at a time, Yinka Shonibare's sculptures draw uncomfortable comparissons with Britain's slave owning past. As the 18th century boat combines elements of British and African culture and history, with its vibrant African fabric sails, it will no doubt cause some level of contraversy amongst art fans in the capital.

Yinka Shonibare's work, Nelsons Ship in a Bottle was unveiled on 27th May 2010 as the fourth pillar Trafalgar Square Sculpture and will stay in residence until late 2011.
