Raising money for Trees for Cities and getting a fashion makeover into the bargain, the Tree Athlon London run, sponsored by Triple Velvet, takes place in September and will see hundreds of people pull on their running shoes for a leafier London.
A three part event for fit tree lovers, the Tree Athlon is a 5km run for everyone that wants to see more trees, not just in London, but in places all over the world where greenery is seriously lacking. From Brixton to Addis Ababa, Trees for Cities aims to raise money for planting trees in urban environments all over the world.
Having taken place in London for the past three years, the Tree Athlon London run is back again this year, and sees a sister run in Leeds the week after. This year the organisation hopes to raise enough money through both events to see trees planted in a variety of projects in Bristol, Manchester, Lees and Reading, alongside London. Internationally, the Tree Athlon runs will also help put fruit trees and indiginous plants in places like Peru, Addis Ababa and Nairobi.
For all participants in the Tree Athlon London run, the chance to raise money for this invaluable charity, take part in a chic fashion swap and rub shoulders with celebrity supporters should give them a day like no other in Battersea Park. Popular with all levels of runner, the park will be full of tree loving Londoners on the 20th September, wearing their personalised Tree Wish bibs and eager to make their sponsors proud.
Obviously everyone who takes part in the Tree Athlon run will be keen to raise as much money as possible for the Trees for Cities fund. This year Trees for Cities is raising money for a wildlife garden at a kids school in South London, and for the streets of East London. Everyone who takes part in the Tree Athlon London gets a Tree Athlon sapling to take home and plant in their own garden, to encourage wildlife and greenery wherever you live.
Last year plenty of celebrity supporters and a host of leggy models, including Lilly Cole, took part in the Tree Athlon run, and there are sure to be even more for Tree Athlon 2008. There will also be plenty for the spectators to do at this year's event. If running is not your thing, you can still come along to the Tree Athlon London race and enjoy some guided walks, a massage, some wood sculpture and a bit of star spotting. From Diarmuid Gavin to Gabby Logan, there are many famous tree lovers who will be out on the day doing their bit for greener cities.
