Featuring over 100 pictures by JMW Turner and other influential artists, the Turner and the Masters exhibition at Tate Britain is an unprecedented show that aims to put masterpieces by the iconic British painter into context alongside the works of art that inspired him. Art lovers can expect to see work by Constable, Titian, Rubens, and Rembrandt amongst many others, on loan from collections from around the world.

Turner and the Masters exhibition
Exploring how Turner sought to imitate, pay tribute to, and ultimately better the work of old masters as well as contemporaries such as Constable and Bonington, the Turner and the Masters exhibition at Tate Britain is the first of its kind. The famous London gallery will reunite works originally displayed together decades ago, as well as exhibit works never before placed together.

Masterpieces reunited
With works from over thirty artists on show, the Turner and the Masters exhibition in London aims to show how Turner was influenced by the work of his predecessors, as well as how he competed with the other artists of his day. Paintings include the seascape Helvoetsluys, which Turner famously added a red buoy to just before the 1832 Royal Academy exhibition opened its doors so that the picture would hold its own next to the vibrant colours of Constable’s Opening of Waterloo Bridge, which also features in the new Tate exhibition.

Exhibition highlights
Other highlights of the exhibition include A Rising Gale by Willem van der Velde the Younger (c. 1632), which will be displayed alongside Turner’s Dutch Boats in a Gale for the first time in over 170 years. The exhibition will remain in London until January 2010, before travelling to Paris and Madrid.

The Turner and Masters exhibition at Tate Britain runs from Wednesday 23rd September 2009 – Sunday 31st January 2010. Exhibition opening times are 10am – 5.40pm daily. Standard tickets cost £12.50; concessions are £11.50, and a senior ticket costs £10.50. For more information and to book your tickets in advance, call 0207 887 8888.
