UK Air Guitar Championships

Get your rocks off and get on stage at the Islington Academy in August as the UK Air Guitar Championships roll into town. This is your chance to show the world what you can do without an instrument and with a lot of windmilling. Pull on your sweatband, stretch those lycra pants and rock out for your chance to fly out to Finland for the Air Guitar World Championships later on in the month.

All true rock and rollers know that it's not what you do it's how you do it, and that was never more true than with air guitar playing. Whether you have never played a real guitar in your life or are actually Brian May, air guitar is all about the attitude. If you haven't got the rock n roll gurn or the pained expression of constipation that generally accompanies all guitar heroes as they play the twiddley high bits, then you don't stand a chance of winning.

No particular skills or equipment are required for the competition, just the ability to play that imaginary guitar like you are a real pro. Attainable by everyone regardless of age, race, gender or sexual orientation, air guitar is the great leveller of rock, and makes for great variety with a stage show. Combining the individuality of standup comedy with the free expression of musical verve, you can expect to see some seriously impressive contestants in the UK Air Guitar Championships over the summer.

Round one sees air guitar players take to the stage for a 60 second performance to a song of their own choosing. They are judged on a combination of their own ability to play the air guitar, their technical skills, rock n roll stage presence and their own air-iness, which is where air guitar actually becomes an art in its own right, rather than just an imitation of playing a guitar. The second round contestants will then have to show off their skills to a compulsory, secret piece of music.

The overall winner of the UK Air Guitar Championships will win a Gibson guitar and a trip to Finland for the world championships on 22nd August 2008, where they will join all the best players in the world to take part in the highly competitive final.
