Undercover at Churchill War Rooms takes a look at the life of the men and women who lived and worked in the bunkers underneath London during the Second World War. Celebrating 70 years since the inaguration of Churchill as Prime Mininster and the opening of the Cabinet War Rooms, the Undercover exhibition is the perfect way to step back in time to relive the war years.
Undercover at Churchill War Rooms
On show throughout this major exhibition are various fascinating artefacts from the time, including personal and first hand accounts of life in the war rooms. Bringing to life the working conditions of the staff during the war, visitors to Undercover at Churchill War Rooms can learn what it was like working in the typing pool during bombing raids, or find out if the bunkers really were bomb proof.
Working with Churchill
Located in a secret area underneath the streets of London, the Cabinet War Rooms were a hotbed of activity 24 hours day. Whether you were a military man, on the right hand of Churchill himself or a typist or a morse code reader, the role you played could have important consequences for not just Britain but the rest of Europe too. Combining the tense atmosphere of war and the humorous attitude of the staff, the voices on record in Undercover at Churchill War Rooms provides a fascinating account of those involved in this extraordinary set up.
Exhibition highlights
One of the highlights of the exhibition Undercover at Churchill War Rooms is the transcript of the speech given by Churchill on 11th September 1940. Never previously displayed in public, the paper contains hand written amendments added at Churchill's behest. Famous for being one of the most stirring speeches given by the Prime Minister during the war, this and a letter giving his verdict on the wartime bunker rooms, are sure to be two of the most popular artefacts on show.
Activities and events
Throughout the exhibition regular activities for kids are taking place from Painting Like Churchill sessions to code breaking and spy themed games for children. Special one off events are also taking place with the chance to spend the night in the bunker as part of Museums at Night, and plenty of Churchill inspired fun to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the man who became the wartime Prime Minister.
