Urban Africa at Design Museum takes you on a journey across the continent with David Adjaye as he documents the urbanisation of several key cities. Stepping away from his normal role as architect, Adjaye has photographed the architecture of various places in order to understand the nature of the built environment in Africa.

Urban Africa at Design Museum
Taking you on a trip around this enormous continent, the exhibition by David Adjaye examines the ways in which various African cities have developed and grown over the last few years. Taking you from the high density inner city areas out to the suburbs and the unofficial slum developments, the photos on show in Urban Africa at Design Museum tell a fascinating story.

Feel the beat of Africa
Inviting you to follow the footsteps of David Adjaye as he traces his way around Africa, the exhibition presents his findings as large scale photos and projections of buildings and city centres, all set against a background of African beats which have been specially composed just for the exhibition of Urban Africa at Design Museum. Mixing the music and the images, visitors to the gallery will feel they are soaking up the culture and atmosphere of various cityscapes in Africa.

Developing world
Despite problems such as war, poverty and underdevelopment being rife in many African countries, the exhibition by David Adjaye truly shows the continent in a completely different light. Urban Africa at Design Museum presents a snapshot of urban life and each city represents the ways in which each country is developing as a whole.

Urban cityscapes
Anyone who has visited Africa will have their own strong memories of the sights, smells and colours. In the Urban Africa exhibition David Adjaye has attempted to capture the essence of places such as Kigali, the capital of Rwanda which shows traces of its Colonial past and Pretoria which is still suffering the effects of apartheid. Here you can step into the shoes of Adjaye and experience in person the revelation of each different city.

Urban Africa at Design Museum takes place from 10am - 5.45pm, Wednesday 31st March - Sunday 5th September 2010. Tickets are £8.50 and £6.50 for concessions.
