Van Dyck exhibition London
Exploring the various influences on the famous Flemish artist and his enduring legacy in Britain, the van Dyck exhibition in London is a chance for art lovers to see some of the famous, sumptuous portraits and painting for themselves. Focusing on the years between 1632, which saw van Dyck's return to London, and 1641, the year of his early death in his house in Blackfriars, the exhibition presents some of the most lavish court portraits to the viewing public.

Charles I
Born in 1599 and trained in the major artistic hub of Antwerp, Sir Anthony van Dyck became one of the major stars of the court of King Charles I after he established himself as an artist in Britain. Perhaps best known for the majestic portraits of members of the royal family and court, including the painting of Charles I on Horseback with M. de St Antoine, 1633, van Dyck became an important influence on succeeding generations of British artists.

Capturing an age
Credited with shaping our interpretation of the Stuart monarchy, van Dyck's portraits are characterised by their Venetian influences and exuberant depiction of the costumes and fabrics of the period. The van Dyck exhibition in London features over 60 works by van Dyck, and will also show a number of paintings by later artists who took inspiration from his methods and style, including works by Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, and Sargent.

Van Dyck and Britain, the van Dyck exhibition in London, is showing at the Tate Britain from Wednesday 18th February - Sunday 17th May 2009. There is also a late showing on the first Friday of every month, with the last admission 9pm.

Tickets for the show cost £10.30 - £12.20. For more information and to book your tickets, call Tate Britain on 0207 887 8888.
