Vancouver in the Square

Celebrate the start of the Winter Olympics and show off your virtual sporting skills at the same time at Vancouver in the Square, when Trafalgar Square is taken over by a viewing screen, gaming booths and a massive ice sculpture.

Opening ceremony
A giant viewing screen will show highlights of the opening ceremony of the Winter Games in Vancouver, with all the fanfare, live performances and parades on show for all to see. The ceremony marks the start of the 2010 Winter Games, and at the Vancouver in the Square special event you can get in the mood for two weeks of skiiing, snowboarding, bobsleighing and curling.

Virtual games
If you think you're a pro on the slopes of Chamonix or if you're a dedicated gamer who gets a kick out of showing your skills, then Vancouver in the Square is your chance to shine. A range of interactive virtual winter games will be available to play in ten pods at Trafalgar Square, overseen by members of the SEGA team.

Interactive event
Both Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 games consoles are being installed in the gaming pods at Vancouver in the Square, so you can get involved by having a go at downhill slalom skiiing, snowboarding, bobsleighing and a range of other winter sports. The best players will be invited to compete against each other in front of thousands as their games are projected onto the outdoors screen, so this could be your chance for glory.

Ice sculpture
A four metre high ice sculpture will also on show at Trafalgar Square to celebrate the start of the Winter Games. The ice sculpture is taking the form of the five Olympic rings, and also celebrates the approaching Summer Games, which come to London in 2012.

Vancouver in the Square takes place on Saturday 13th Februrary 2010. Highlights from the opening ceremony are being screened from 10am, and the event finishes at 6pm. The event is free to attend.
