Coming to the National Gallery for the winter of 2010, the Venice exhibition London event is the first of its kind to be organised in Britain. Showcasing stunning views of Venice represented by the likes of Canaletto and other artistic masters, the exhibition features around 55 masterpieces borrowed from around the UK, mainland Europe, and North America.

Canaletto and his Rivals
Titled Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals, the Venice exhibition London event at the National Gallery aims to present the finest collection of Venetian views since the famous exhibition in Venice of 1967. The exhibition includes masterpieces such as Canaletto's painting from 1744, pictured, titled Santa Maria della Salute and the Entrance to the Grand Canal looking East, which is on loan from the Royal Collection.

Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals
Celebrating the sumptuous paintings and the beautiful Venetian landscapes they depict, the Venice exhibition London event also highlights the amazing skill and artistry of Canaletto and his contemporaries. Other artists featured in the show include Luca Carlevarijs, Gasper van Witell, Bernardo Bellotto and Francesco Guardi.

The British influence
The Canaletto and his Rivals exhibition at the National Gallery also celebrates the work of lesser known painters such as Antonio Joli, Pietro Bellotti and Francesco Tironi, whose work was influenced by, and in part created for, the market for scenic views of Venice created by wealthy Britons on the Grand Tour. In each room of the exhibition, major works by Canaletto are placed alongside similar views of the city by other artists, who may have chosen a different approach or method to painting the scene.

Taste of history
Starting with a 1703 landscape by Luca Carlevarijs and finishing around the time of Napoleon's invasion and the fall of the Republic in 1797, the paintings in the Venice exhibition London event at the National Gallery span decades of Venetian history. Many of the paintings are on special loan from private collections both in the UK and abroad, so this is a rare opportunity for art lovers to see these masterpieces first hand.

The Venice exhibition London event runs from 10am - 6pm Wednesday 13th October 2010 - Sunday 16th January 2011. Tickets are £12.00, £11.00 concession, £6.00 for students and free for under 12s.
