A stunning Vincent Van Gogh exhibition London event takes place in early 2010 as the Royal Academy exhibits some rarely seen fragile letters and sketches from the world famous artist. Certain to be a landmark exhibition, The Real Van Gogh will no doubt be pulling in art fans right up until 18th April when the show closes.
The artist and his letters
A major component and a hugely exciting feature of the Vincent Van Gogh exhibition takes the form of 35 letters that have very rarely been on show to the public, due to their exceptionally fragile nature. Showing alongside 63 paintings and 30 drawings, the letters highlight the art in a new and exciting way, giving the viewer real insight into the mind of the artist at the time of painting.
Vincent Van Gogh exhibition
London is already home to several pieces from the Van Gogh estate including the multi million pound Sunflowers which hangs in the National Gallery, so there are sure to be thousands of people keen to see more of his work at the Royal Academy. On show until the middle of April 2010, the Real Van Gogh exhibition invites you to take a more personal look at his life and work.
Short lived talent
Vincent Van Gogh only began to paint in his early adulthood and his suicide when he was only 37 meant that his artistic career lasted just ten years. Despite the relatively short span of his creative life, Van Gogh produced an enormous amount of work, with over 800 paintings and 1,200 drawings in his catalogue, and you can see many of his famous and lesser known pieces on show at the Vincent Van Gogh exhibition.
Real Van Gogh exhibition highlights
As the inspiration for the London exhibition comes from the letters than Van Gogh regularly wrote to his brother and his friends, the paintings you can see on show at the Royal Academy are viewed through the correspondence. Letter sketches were often included, allowing the recipent of his letters to see how his paintings were progressing. Along with these fascinating drawings, viewers can also see the paintings on which they were based. Popular paintings on show at the Vincent Van Gogh exhibition include Self Portrait as an Artist, The Yellow House and Vincent's Chair with His Pipe.
The Vincent Van Gogh exhibition, The Real Van Gogh: the Artist and his Letters is on show at the Royal Academy from 10am to 5.30pm, from Saturday 23rd January - Sunday 18th April 2010. Late night openings take place on Friday until 10pm.
Standard adult tickets cost £12.00; concessions are available. Tickets for those on income support and for children aged 12 - 18 cost £4.00, children aged 8 - 11 cost £3.00, while kids under 7 go free.
