Witness a spectacular free event this summer in Waka on the Thames. A New Zealand war canoe takes to the river and the 16 man crew, in full traditional dress, promise for a powerful presentation.

City of London Festival
Waka on the Thames is part of the City of London Festival which hosts a number of free family events annually across London. This year famous landmarks in London will be lit up by free events centred around the arts and culture of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Waka taua
A Waka is a Maori war canoe that can be up to 40 metres in length. Usually hand carved and decorated, these canoes are truly something to behold. This particular Waka is manned by 16 Maoris of New Zealand’s Toi Maori and London’s Ngati Ranana. The tribesman will be in full traditional dress, making Waka on the Thames a very special ceremony indeed. In order to get a good view make sure to visit the north Riverside Walk.

Haka
After Waka on the Thames be sure to visit Paternoster Square for another excellent demonstration. Here the Waka will be on display alongside the Maori tribesman who will perform the dance made famous by the All Blacks Rugby Union team, the Haka. Haka performances are at 1pm – 1.15pm and 1.45pm – 2.00pm.

Waka on the Thames will commence at 10.30am, Friday 1st July 2011 at Tower Bridge and finish at Blackfriars. Admission is free.
