Watch Me Move at Barbican Art Gallery invites you to celebrate the world of animation with a summer exhibition and a full programme of talks, screenings and other events to accompany it.
Watch Me Move at Barbican Art Gallery
The exhibition, entitled Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, looks back at the last 150 years and examines every single aspect of animation from its inception as stop frame photography to the current mind-blowing technological advances of today. Whether you are a sucker for the Disney crew, delight in the comical Aardman characters or go crazy for Japanese anime, there is plenty to intrigue and surprise all animation fans at this exhibition.
Get animated
From cut outs, collages, puppets, clay and stop motion to experiemental and commerical creators, animation is seen all over the world on a daily basis. Since the American cartoonist Winsor McCay prefaced his short film with a collection of colourfuk animated characters parading across the screen in 1911, the possibilities of animation have been expounded in numerous ways by numerous artists. Under the spotlight in Watch Me Move at Barbican Art Gallery, the exhibition charts the history of the art form and showcases key figures in its development and popularity.
Early work
Much of the exhibition is dedicated to the pioneering developments of artists like Percy Smith whose 1921 film The Birth of the Flower shows his amazing use of time lapse photography. For anyone who missed the fantastic the recent Eadweard Muybridge exhibition at the Tate Britain can check out more of his work at Watch Me Move at Barbican Art Gallery, with his iconic pictures of animals and people in motion. You can also see the early work of Pixar with the very first film Luxo Jr from 1986 which follows the antics of a small desklamp.
Mickey Mouse to Marvel and DC
More recent animations also come under the limelight with some of the most prominent characters from the 1930s still proving popular today. Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, Betty Boop and Yogi Bear all feature in the show, alongside Superman and The Incredible Hulk. There is also more independent work from smaller studios and those around the globe included in Watch Me Move at Barbican Art Gallery as the exhibition showcases the likes of Francis Alys from Belgium, Tim Burton's Vincent, Cao Fei from Beijing, Zbigniew Rybczynski from Poland and Christian Boltanski from France.
Watch Me Move at Barbican Art Gallery takes place from Wednesday 15th June - Sunday 11th September 2011. Tickets are £10.00 online or £12.00 on the door, £7.00-£8.00 for concessions, and under 12s are free.
