With free outdoor theatre, circus, music and dance over the summer, the Watch This Space London festival is certainly one way to soak up some culture with your sun in 2011. Organised by the National Theatre, the series of events includes highlights such as science fiction inspired light projections, wire walkers and the Alternative Village Fete on the Astroturf on Theatre Square.

Taking place on and around Theatre Square, the Watch This Space London festival aims to bring the performing arts off the theatre stage and onto the streets with a series of alfresco live performances and free events. All ages will be delighted with the season of live outdoor arts events, which start with the UK premiere of Planet Lem, a science fiction spectacular based on the writings of Stanislaw Lem and featuring moving sets, light effects and multimedia projections.

Comedy and circus acts
If you think that the summer's all about sunshine, ice cream and lazy, hazy days, then think again, as the Watch This Space London festival is bringing some spine tingling and jaw dropping entertainment your way. Look forward to aerial circus performances as well as trampolinists and jugglers from the Circus Space graduates throughout the festival.

Family fun
The festival also includes plenty to keep kids and families happy over the summer, with paintball juggling from The Gandinis as well as break dancing performances from the Avant Garde Dance Company. The National Theatre is also co-hosting this year's Liberty disabled arts festival with the Southbank Centre.

Festival highlights
Other highlights of the National Theatre's festival include street theatre from The Chipolatas, who fuse music and comedy with audience participation. The National Theatre will also be hosting a pop up urban campsite for the Big Sleepover, and collaborating with the Thames Festival in September to provide live music and DJ sets for the crowds.

Bank holiday weekend
The long bank holiday weekend at the end of August is celebrated in flamboyant style with a series of free events at the National Theatre, including a quirky reinterpretation of the traditional village fete.
