A fascinating Watteau Drawings exhibition London event takes place at the Royal Academy this year as the French artist's work is celebrated in a major retrospective. Bringing together his enormous portfolio of works on paper, the exhibition is the first ever to be held in the UK and will no doubt attract plenty of attention from lovers of 18th century European art.
Watteau Drawings exhibition
London has seen many major exhibitions based on paintings and sculpture over the past few years, but not many can concentrate purely on an artists sketches and drawings. Here over 80 different pieces demonstrate the skill and inventiveness of Jean-Antoine Watteau, and gives visitors the chance to see the development of his methods throughout his career.
Trois crayons
Renowned for his mastery of the three chalks method, which saw him capture the detail of a scene using only red, white and black chalks in a finely balanced way, Watteau sketched and drew continuously throughout his life, and kept his drawings in bound volumes which he could then refer to when composing a painting. On show in the Watteau Drawing exhibition, you can see a variety of pieces that illustrate the breadth of his skill and his fascination with line, form and colour.
Influential works
Not only did Watteau have a profound effect on the artists who worked contemporaneously with him, but his methods of drawing and depicting particularly colour had a long reaching influence on those who came after him. Foreshadowing the Impressionists in both execution and treatment of colour, he also pre-empted the French Rococo with his hugely varied subject matter. On show in the Watteau Drawings exhibition at the RA are several examples of his works that confirm his influence as both a painter and a draughtsman on several future generations of French artists.
Exhibition highlights
Several notable inclusions in the Watteau Drawings exhibition range from his early work, The Shipwreck from circa 1710 to the Woman on a Swing, Seen from the Back, from 1715. Other recognisable pieces included in the show are Interior of a Draper's Shop, Standing Savoyard and Seated Persian Wearing a Turban, which demonstrate his ability to portray the charming, the ambiguous and the natural with great skill.
The Watteau Drawings exhibition London show takes place from 10am - 6pm from Saturday 12th March - Sunday 5th June 2011 at Royal Academy. Tickets are £10.00, £8.00 for OAPs, £7.00 for students, £3.00 for 12-18 years, £5.00f or 8-11 years and free for under 7s.
