Celebrating the seminal contribution made to British Modernism by the Jewish writers and artists of the East End, the Whitechapel Boys exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery brings together innovative prose, paintings and sculptures for a free public showing.

Whitechapel Boys exhibition
Known as the Whitechapel Boys, the radical and experimental Jewish writers and artists who had settled in the East End of London from central and eastern Europe are widely credited with kickstarting British Modernism from their meeting place at the Whitechapel Library in the early years of the 20th century. From abstract art, philosophical writing and political radicalism, many of these contributions to a new British movement can now be seen at the newly refurbished Whitechapel Gallery.

Archive material
Taking full advantage of the 100 year old archive at the Whitechapel Gallery, the Whitechapel Boys exhibition includes artists' letters and rare items from writers' personal collections, such as the manuscript of Clare Winsten's autobiography and the first sketchbooks of Alfred Wolmark. Catalogues and press cuttings will also be on show so that visitors can chart the emergence of an exciting avant garde in the East End.

Show highlights
Highlights of the Whitechapel Boys exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery include works of art produced before and after the First World War, including Racehorses by David Bomberg and Rabbi and rabbintzin by Mark Gertler. The first edition of Stephen Winsten's Chains, and John Rodker's Collected Poems from 1912 - 1925 will also be on display.
