Whitechapel Gallery opening exhibitions
Originally opened in 1901, the Whitechapel Gallery became internationally respected for its pioneering exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. After an extensive restoration programme and gallery expansion with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Whitechapel Gallery opening exhibitions include work from internationally renowned artists, and also celebrate the rich and vibrant legacy of creativity of London's East End.
Isa Genzken: Open Sesame
Included in the Whitechapel Gallery opening exhibitions is the first major retrospective of the work of German sculptor and experimental artist Isa Genzken. Running from 5th April to 21st June, the Open Sesame exhibition presents sculptures and 3D works made out of a host of unusual materials, including dolls, clothing, architectural and industrial material, and photographs.

Whitechapel Boys
Making full use of the Whitechapel Gallery's 100 year old archive, the Whitechapel Boys exhibition takes a look at the lives and work of the group of Jewish East Enders who contributed to the founding of British Modernism. From paintings and sculptures to poetry collections and first edition literature, the Whitechapel Boys show is another free exhibition that can be visited from Sunday 5th April.

Using the modernist house of Erno and Ursula Goldfinger as a setting, the 2006 film Interiors follows two women moving independently through the 1930s house, with a rotating scuplture by Barabara Hepworth as their focus. Running until 21st June 2009, the Ursula Mayer exhibition is also free to attend.
