Focusing on three young artists from the beginning of the 20th century, Wild Thing at Royal Academy is a fascinating exhibition, showing many pieces of art that have never before been seen in London.

Wild Thing: Epstein, Gaudier-Grzeska, Gill
The three artists on show in Wild Thing at Royal Academy are all responsible for some ofthe most radical sculpture to come out of Britain from 1905 onwards. This is the first time their works have been exhibited together and this stunning exhibition highlights just how revolutionary their ideas were at the time.

Radical thinkers
Although their backgrounds could not be more diverse (Epstein was a New YorK Jew, Gaudier-Brzeska the son of an Orleans joiner, and Gill's father was a Brighton clergyman) they came together to create the beginnings of modern British sculpture. As Wild Thing at Royal Academy illustrates, the work produced by these artists over a ten year period before the First World War aimed to return sculpture to the days of prehistoric sculptural expression. In short, to be wild.

Sex, fertility and procreation
As with many new art movements around this time, the sculptors shocked their contemporaries and the art establishment by being obsessed with sex. Placing virility and fertility at the centre of their works, many of their sculptures focused on the physical nature of sex, childbirth and the more primitive instincts of humankind. On show as part of Wild Thing at Royal Academy is Gill's Ecstasy, which caused much controversy at the time.

Wild Thing exhibition highlights
90 pieces are included in the exhibition overall, with many featuring the themes of sex, fertility, the human condition, the advancement of technology and the impact of war. Sculpture fans will be keen to see pieces like Epstein's Rock Drill, Gill's Mother and Child, and Gaudier-Brzeska's Birds Erect on show at Wild Thing at Royal Academy.

Wild Thing: Epstein, Gaudier-Grzeska and Gill in on show at Royal Academy from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 24th October 2009 - Sunday 24th January 2010. For more information or to book tickets for the event, click on the link below.
