A Women War Artists exhibition takes place at Imperial War Museum this year as the venue celebrates various female artists who have captured the sights and experiences of war in their art since World War I.

Women War Artists exhibition
Focusing on the remarkable achievements and experiences of female war artists, the Imperial War Museum exhibition looks at the nature of those on the front line, at home and in the artists' studio. Examining the importance of women war artists as eyewitnesses, participants and social commentators, the show aims to bring to the fore a selection of key works from an outstanding collection.

Women at work
From specially commissioned war art to secret observations, the Women War Artists exhibition highlights the viewpoint of various different female artists, such as the depiction of factory work during the Second World War and contemporary pieces by the likes of Fiona Banner and Mona Hatoum. On show for the first time is Priscilla Thonrycroft's oil painting Runaway Horse in an Air Raid Alarm, which demonstrates along with watercolours by Margaret Abbess and Eleanor Erlund Hudson, the constraints and possibilities of war time art.

Exhibition highlights
No doubt several of the highlights of the Women War Artists exhibition will include Measures of Distance by Mona Hatoum, which sees the reunion of a mother and daughter in war torn Lebanon; works by Linda Kitson, the first official female war artist to accompany the troops into battle during the Falklands War; and paintings by Dame Laura Knight RA, such as The Nuremberg Tril and Ruby Loftus Screwing a Breech-ring.

The Women War Artists exhibition takes place from Saturday 9th April 2011 - Sunday 8th January 2012 at Imperial War Museum. Entrance is free.
