With all eyes on the UK in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the World Shakespeare Festival London events celebrates the seminal contribution of William Shakespeare to the English language and popular culture.
Celebrating The Bard
With celebrations taking place in Stratford-upon-Avon and Newcastle as well as the World Shakespeare Festival London events, the seven month festival of live performances, exclusive collaborations and ground breaking theatre is a must for fans of The Bard. The festival is led by the Royal Shakespeare Company and other major contributors include the National Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe, so expectations are high that the event will feature a high calibre of artistic output.
International collaborations
Starting on St George's Day and finishing after the end of the Olympic Games, the World Shakespeare Festival London event features a series of international collaborations and simultaneously celebrates Shakespeare as a British icon and as a figure of world wide cultural significance. From Othello the Moor of Venice to the Danish prince Hamlet and the tragic young figures of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare's plays are populated by a diverse range of characters, and the festival aims to highlight the international and long lasting significance of both the playwright and his plays.
