The worlds first urban art auction takes place at Bonhams in February as works from street and graffiti artists go under the hammer. Up for sale are several famous pieces, most notably the Warholesque take on Kate Moss by Banksy.
Exploring the artistic phenomenon that is urban art, the worlds first urban art auction is set to cause quite a stir in the art world as Banksy, Adam Neate, File, Keith Harring, Invader and D*Face all have their work up for sale. With prices for urban artists work on the rise since the fame of Banksy and the like has spread, there are sure to be plenty of collectors with wads of cash at the ready at Bonhams.
Banksy is probably the most well known of the artists with their work being sold in the auction at Bonhams. And he is also probably the most expensive too. With Banksy pieces selling to the likes of Angelina Jolie and other celebs recently, there will be many urban art fans on the lookout to grab a piece of the notoriously anonymous artists work in worlds first urban art auction.
The most expensive estimates on work in the urban art auction are those on Banksy pieces, with the Kate Moss painting up for between £20,000 to £30,000 and the work entitled Laugh Now for a whopping £150,000 to £200,000. But those with a passion for urban art without the wallet to match can still get their hands on something to hang above the mantel piece, as D*Face's work is set to go for around £1,000 to £2,5000. Which is small change compared to Banksy's prices.
A most unusual sale that will see the prestigious New Bond Street auction house filled with artwork more akin to the streets, undergrounds and bridges of London, the sale is also a worlds first. Urban art auctions will now take the unprecedented step of becoming mainstream, but Bonhams are the only auction house who can claim this unique first sale.
